Book progress

I would just like to say a big thanks for all of you who supported the idea of me writing a book with some fellow geeks. Unfortunately due to the publishers short sightedness and general idiot attitude this is no longer happening. I am actually now happy about this decision, any I honestly do not know how they get so many books written. Well actually I do, most books are just MSDN regurgitated, but ours would not have been. Their loss.

On the plus side I will be continuing my work on all the subject matter from the book and will be writing code project articles and a open source MVVM framework for use with WPF. So something good has come out of it.

Here is what really happened to force our hand not to write the book

This sucks. I was actually looking forward to reading it. Maybe you should work on an open e-book (a long article)?

  2. sacha says:

Yeah it does really suck, but they were outrageous, and they sent us like this 30 page formatting guideline expected a full book in 3 months, and we were writing hard core stuff, you know full end to end apps and frameworks using WCF/WPF/LINQ/EF/Silverlight/PRISM/RESTFul WCF/RIA Services the lot.

    Idiots

and heres my 2cents (Pounds?) worth:

    …their mistake…vittuako me niistä!!!

  6. Jeff Carley says:

Such a pitty. I believe your book would have been a homerun for them. Your writings are so highly regarded its ignorant to think that such a book wouldn’t be successful. I’m still looking forward to what ever publishings come of the work you’ve done already. I know Rockford Lhotka has published eBooks and sold them through his website without the use of a publisher. Keeps the price down and still gets content out. Either way, keep up the great work Sacha.

  7. danice says:

    Have you thought in auto-publishing?
    For example in http://www.lulu.com/

  8. Frickel says:

    Hello Sacha,

I was also looking forward to your book :/

    – Why not write a ebook only and sell it on your own small shop?

    – Why not write a paper book and then turn towards 3 big publisher one of them will surely accept you.

  9. sacha says:

Thanks Jeff, I should be able to still get some content out there, and still want to work with the 2 other great authors (Marlon got appointed MVP the other day, at last, hooray) to create one of the more complex demos we would have done for the book anyway.

  10. sacha says:

Frickel / Danice we did think about self publishing, but we all just really liked the idea of a paper book, still I for one am off the idea for now, but I will now be able to get back to doing what I love which is writing shorter articles. At least that way I can format it and write exactly what I want to write about.

  11. Jasvinder says:

Bad news for all guys who are looking for your book.
I was planning to buy your book.
    But for now, Noooooo HOPE…

  12. Giorgi says:

    Hi Sacha,

I believe it’s a good idea to write a small ebook. It will be interesting for many developers out there. What about a framework you were going to develop?

    Thanks.

  13. sacha says:

    Giorgi,

I am off the book for sure, as for the MVVM framework, you can expect the 1st article in that series in the next week or 2.

  14. sacha says:

    Jasvinder

Look out for articles at codeproject by us 3, we will be aiming to get the content out there somehow.

  15. Richard Cunday says:

I was also looking forward to seeing a book authored by you as well. I know it would have rocked based on the great content you have already authored on code project. Apparently the publishers did not get the memo!! Still looking forward to continue reading your award winning great articles on codeproject.

  16. sacha says:

    Cheers Richard

  17. Sheraz says:

Ayende recently wrote a book on DSL using Manning. May be he can give you a good update on his experience (if you are still interested to write the book which I realllyyyyy hope that you do).

  18. sacha says:

Sheraz, you know Ayende and think I write some interesting stuff,WOW thanks. Ayende, phew that boy is “THE MAN”.

And yeah Manning are a good outfit, I have loads of their books, perhaps Ill look into it. Maybe Ill wait for WPF 4 1st.

Could you tell me the name of Ayende books, Id like ot buy that one. I have a mild interest in DSL.

  19. George says:

  22. Sheraz says:

    Sorry for being little late
    http://www.manning.com/rahien/
considering the books out there for WPF as of now, it’s much better time to write a book that’d stand out. May be waiting till WPF4 comes out wont be too late either. Most of the books I’ have read are similar and define the contents with different angle (no new stuff). Therefore I think your book would definitely rock. I don’t know what contents you are planning to write about, but looking at your work on CodeProject, I’m pretty sure people would love to read it.

  23. sacha says:

Cheers Sheraz, Yeah we may come back to after WPF4/C# 4 are out. Lots of new cool toys. Dynamics/Touch mmmm WF is totally new, using XAML.

  24. Doug Troy says:

    Sacha,

If you have a change of heart, speak with Chris Duncan about who he published his book through and how that experience was; he’s written and had two books published.

Course, there’s also creating a PDF and selling it on-line, like the author of the CSLA does his stuff; just another thought.

  25. sacha says:

    Cheers for your comments Troy

  26. RRaveen says:

    RRaveen

Sorry to say I do all my writing either on my blog or for codeproject. I am sure you will find some other authors for your site. Good luck

  28. Jammer says:

Well it truly is their loss. Who wants such people to have any control over your IP any way … bunch of idiots.

  29. sacha says:

    Thanks Jammer

  30. Writer says:

    What about another publisher?
Have you asked just one and then gave up?

  31. sacha says:

    Writer,

Yes, thats it for me, I is sticking to articles man, I prefer them

  32. Frickel says:

    Hey Sacha,

write Articles/month and put all articles into a ebook and those 12 ebooks into a archiv link 😉

name it “Sacha rides on WPF” 😉

  33. sacha says:

Frickel, Articles there will be, ebook, maybe.

  34. Gary says:

    Sacha

This is a shame. Maybe you should write the book then take it to the publishers. That way if (and a big IF) they are not 100% satisfied then you only need to ammend what you’ve done.

I’m sure it would have been a good read.

    All the best.

  35. BigO says:

    Hi Sacha

Why do you not use lulu.com to publish it?

Of course u need marketing, proof reading but publishers aren’t really usefull anymore.

  36. sjingyu says:

I have read some of your articles about WPF, and I think they are great, easy to understand. And when I was in college,I always found some books hard understanding and prolixity. Well, who knows how they get published..
well,do not give up.. Wish your book get published soon.

  37. sacha says:

sjingyu (the japanese / Chinese girl right) Thanks. The book is off now though, I will however always write articles, as I love to share and I learn a lot from it also.

  38. Michael says:

Is this the book you’re referencing? (due in December 2009)
